Minimizing the Cost of Making Magnesium

With careful selection of low cost coal and a dedicated power plant using that coal to make electricity, magnesium can be made by the nozzle based magnesium process for about $0.30 a pound.  This coupled with the concept that magnesium production is an integral part of an energy complex, where the goal is to keep the power plant operating 24/7 to minimize costs.  The magnesium plant will be designed to have significant turndown and have the capabilities of keeping the power plant at full capacity during low power demand for the commercial customers of the energy complex.  Oxygen, from a dedicated plant, is used to improve the heat balance and minimize the size of the equipment while enabling future sequestering of carbon dioxide produced by the combustion processes.
