Free Preliminary Evaluation

We will give our preliminary opinions on the cause of your failure,  for no charge with the restrictions below.

What you need to do:

If a metal component fails and interferes with the operation of  your plant, and you don't think the cost of a failure analysis is justified,  but would like a metallurgist to take a quick look at your failure and give you their initial observations, we are willing to do this for no charge.  To take advantage of this offer you need to do the following:

1) Complete and submit a Failure Analysis Questionnaire.

2) Take picture of the failed sample.

  • Take three picture from a distance, at approximately 120 degree intervals, where the sample takes about 1/3 to 1/2 of the picture frame.

  •  Take close up pictures where the sample takes up about 90% of the picture from the sample vantage points.

  • Take a close up of the failed area where any cracks, or similar, take up about 100% of the picture frame.

3) Email us the pictures and contact information.

What we will do:

1) We will look at the failure and take good quality pictures of the part and the failed area.

2) We will look at the failed area under a stereo scope and take close-up pictures of the failed area and any other area that appears to be abnormal or provide clues to the cause of the failure.

3) We will issue a preliminary report

  •  We will give you our preliminary opinion on the mode of failure (fatigue, tensile, SCC, etc.)

  • The report will contain up to three pictures.

  • The report will be posted on a webpage*.

4) In some cases, our preliminary evaluation will narrow the mode of failure down to several options instead of a single failure mode.  In such a case, we will:

  • Identify the probable failure modes, listed in the order we think most likely,

  • Identify what work would be necessary to increase the confidence of our decision.

Why We Are Making This Offer

  • Business during the recession is slow.

  • We hope this opens the door to future customers.

  • We hope some of you want additional work done after the free preliminary evaluation ... don't worry there will not be a hard sell.

Restrictions:

  • Restricted to samples under 20 pounds that are shipped prepaid  to MV, Inc.  If you want the samples returned, provide a prepaid UPS shipping label or similar.

  • Sample will not be cut or otherwise physically altered with the possible exception that the sample may be cleaned or degreased at our sole discretion.

  • Samples must be accompanied with a failure analysis questionnaire; all questions must be answered.

  • Samples may not contaminated with anything that would cause unsafe conditions when received by MV, Inc.

  • MV, Inc. will not travel to your site without compensation.

  • MV reserves the right to convert the report into a generic case study with all specific information about your company removed and post this report on its website.

  • We reserve the right to cancel or suspend this offer without notice;  we will respond to the failure analysis questionnaire and let you know that the offer is no longer valid if that is the case.

  • Only one free preliminary evaluation per customer; we reserve the right to define what constitutes a customer.
